Get ready for Japan: your payment, data and airport checklist

By JengDeal editor· Last verified: 9 October 2026 (HKT)· 7 min read

Leave Hong Kong with device compatibility, eSIM timing, yen backup and SMS sorted. Set up arrival data and your return airport plan, then count discounts.

借定唔借?還得到先好借! (To borrow or not to borrow? Borrow only if you can repay!)

Build this list before spending

  1. Record dates, hotel address, airport terminal and first transport leg. Save bookings and official contacts offline.
  2. Decide who needs independent data, whether you will drive rurally or share a hotspot. Use previous consumption as a guide, rather than inventing a GB requirement.
  3. Verify the exact phone's eSIM support and carrier lock before purchasing a discounted package.
  4. Budget existing travel expenses and full repayment. Check overseas card settings, limits, PIN, charges and acceptance.
  5. Read coverage, total/daily allowance, throttling, sharing, top-ups and validity start; compare the whole cost.
  6. Only then check referral eligibility and the checkout deduction. Save terms, selected currency and refund conditions; rewards should not create unnecessary purchases.

Have a next move when payment fails

SituationFirst actionPayment pitfall
Shop rejects the cardAsk what it accepts; use reserved yen or another routeAn international brand works at every shop
Terminal offers yen/HKDCompare totals and rates, then issuer FX/HKD cross-border chargesHKD may contain DCC markup; it does not automatically remove conversion cost
You want Suica/PASMOCheck route, version, purchase and funding methodAn IC card covers every transport ticket
Cash runs outCheck ATM support, hours and both sides' feesCredit-card withdrawal may be a cash advance, rather than shopping

Reserve cash against planned expenses; no amount fits everyone. HKMA's 2015 DCC article explains the mechanism, rather than supplying this trip's fee rates.

Check the phone version, not just its name

Match the model in settings to manufacturer guidance on sales region, software, eSIMs and carrier lock. Apple flags certain Hong Kong and Macao models with two nano-SIMs. Overseas support for the same series does not establish yours. Android needs its own model check, rather than copied iPhone screens.

If unsupported, compare a physical travel SIM, Hong Kong roaming or a pocket Wi-Fi rental. Ask about collection, return, deposits and battery. Shared connectivity means staying near the device, not simply dividing its price between travellers.

Different uses need different checks

Your useCheck before choosingExtra preparation
Short city trip with maps/messagesWhole-trip validity, total allowance and individual accessDownload offline routes; avoid excess data just for a discount
Rural Hokkaido drivingActual destination coverage and partner networksBackup navigation; Japan coverage is not signal on every road
Sharing among several peopleHotspot limits, throttling, combined use and top-up pricePower and connectivity when the group splits up
Calls or verification SMSWhether the data package includes a number, calls or textsHome-line overseas service; a data eSIM need not have a Japanese number

Unlimited data still needs fair-use and speed checks. This is preparation guidance without network testing, invented fixed allowances or package rankings.

Buying does not mean installing immediately

Read validity first. Airalo explains that some packages start on a supported destination network, while others start at installation, even outside Japan. Save the post-purchase activation deadline and install with stable internet at the appropriate time. Installing days before departure is not universal advice.

Saily's official instructions call for pre-departure preparation and required travel-line roaming. On arrival check line selection, APN and switching. Providers can use installation and activation differently; follow your package and device instructions rather than another brand's routine.

Once the package fits, inspect these referral records

ProviderRecord showsAt checkout
AiraloCheck live: US$3 offNew customer's first order, code at signup/checkout; other promotions can affect eligibility, so inspect the actual saving
SailyCheck live: US$5–US$10 offCode on first checkout; currency and standard/Ultra affect the discount, with minimum price and no added promotions
RoamlessCheck live: US$5 walletCode in app followed by qualifying purchase; data credit rather than cash, with no promo code on the same purchase

These track the shared records, rather than a new Japan-only campaign. Check Japan inclusion, duration and personal eligibility, then the final total and payment fees before buying.

Roamless is one global eSIM with pay-as-you-go data that doesn't expire — one eSIM for everywhere, no per-country juggling. Sign up with referral code JIMMYQZD, add funds to your wallet, and a US$5 bonus lands in it; the referrer gets US$5 too, so everyone's happy. Ideal for the lazy traveller who hates buying a new eSIM per country. Note: you add your own funds first before the bonus arrives, the bonus is wallet credit not cash, and your phone needs to be eSIM-compatible.

Requirement: Enter code JIMMYQZD, then buy at least US$5 of credit or a data plan

Five things to do after landing

  1. Check that the plan is ready and travel line enabled, then select it for data. Follow provider roaming and APN requirements.
  2. Inspect automatic data switching and home-line settings so the phone does not select unplanned roaming data.
  3. Try maps, messages and essential logins. Working data does not establish working Hong Kong SMS.
  4. If disconnected, inspect plan, coverage, line and APN, then official support. Avoid deleting the eSIM first; reinstallation has separate rules.
  5. Use saved transport directions. If payment fails, switch to your backup and keep receipts/currency records instead of rushing into duplicate payments.

Keep the trip budget ahead of reward stacking

Reserve full repayment before counting eligible bank rewards, caps and costs. Currency refunds can also differ. The draft credit-card routine covers applying through renewal, helping keep a credit limit separate from a shopping budget.

For a planned Tokyo city break, choose data around current needs. If the trip changes to rural Hokkaido driving, revisit coverage and navigation rather than merely buying a bigger pack. An activity voucher also does not establish portal cashback eligibility; the draft cashback shopping steps explains conditions and tracking.

Match the return lounge to the flight

Check Narita versus Haneda, terminal, international/domestic route and airside/landside, followed by hours, boarding time and stay limit. For example, Priority Pass lists Narita NOA in Terminal 1 after security and passport control, on floor 3 near gate 26, with a two-hour stay limit. These are checking examples; recheck arrangements before travel.

Then verify your membership includes that facility, remaining visits, guest/child charges, documents and capacity. Directories also list restaurants and rest facilities, which your plan may not include. Free registration and welcome points are not an entry ticket. With insufficient time, compare ordinary food and seating without disrupting boarding for a lounge.

Do not leave settings behind when you get home

  • Restore local data and check roaming and possible renewals; travel packages do not all end automatically.
  • Read card and carrier bills, match currencies, charges and received rewards, then count the trip's real cost.
  • Keep orders, installation details and terms. Refunds and disputes follow individual provider processes rather than an assumed payout.
  • Retain offline hotel, transport and support records needed as evidence for unfinished orders.

FAQ

Can I buy a discounted eSIM and check the phone later?
Check model, region and lock first. Unsupported devices need a physical SIM, roaming or pocket Wi-Fi; a discount cannot make the phone compatible.
Can installation before Japan waste package days?
Yes, depending on the plan. Some Airalo packages start at installation, others on supported-network connection. Read yours before deciding.
Does disabling home-line data roaming stop every fee?
No. Calls, SMS and other services follow carrier overseas terms. Disabling the entire line can stop bank SMS; keeping it active requires understanding costs.
Should I delete and reinstall when arrival data fails?
Check plan status, line selection, roaming, APN and coverage, then contact support. Reinstallation after deletion has separate conditions; do not start there.
Do lounge members still need to check location?
Yes. Match terminal, airside position, hours and included benefits, then guest charges and entry rules. Do not discover the facility is off your route only after arriving.
