Your Hong Kong credit-card routine: apply, spend, repay and check rewards

By JengDeal editor· Last verified: 9 October 2026 (HKT)· 8 min read

Build card rewards around purchases you already need. Follow the welcome tasks, cashback caps, miles checks, overseas payment choices and renewal costs.

借定唔借?還得到先好借! (To borrow or not to borrow? Borrow only if you can repay!)

Start with the shopping list you already have

Write down your usual essentials, online orders and trips already arranged, then check whether those merchants accept the card. Do not work backwards from a welcome threshold to invent purchases. Rewards still on their way cannot fund repayment.

A credit card borrows against the issuer's credit and is repaid through a statement; an ordinary debit card takes money from its linked account. Apple Pay and Google Pay are payment interfaces. Adding a credit card leaves the purchase a credit-card transaction.

Keep the rules manageable

  • Choose a route you understand, accepted by your merchants, with conditions your existing spending can meet. Arrange backup payment as needed; several welcome bonuses are not a reason to apply for several cards at once.
  • Check Hong Kong residency, age, income and document requirements, then the new-customer definition and previous cardholding rules. Meeting the basics still leaves approval to the issuer.
  • Put statement dates, payment deadlines and available full-repayment funds together. If only minimum payments fit, address cash flow and debts first.

Match your payment to the checks

Your planned useBefore buyingEasy to overlook
Everyday local shoppingAcceptance, transaction category and reward capThe highest rate may not cover the whole bill
Online order with a codeMerchant discount and issuer reward exclusions separatelyTwo advertised rewards do not establish stackability
Mobile-wallet paymentDirect purchase or wallet top-up, and issuer classificationA top-up may not be ordinary eligible spending
Travel or overseas shoppingSettlement currency, exchange rate, FX and HKD cross-border feesAn HKD price can still contain a conversion markup
Collecting travel milesDates, seats, taxes, transfer charges and expiryEnough miles do not establish seat availability
Bills or instalmentsTransaction eligibility and associated chargesSpecial rules and refunds may affect rewards

For the same planned purchase, count rewards you can actually obtain, then deduct annual and necessary fees. An advertised maximum cannot replace the terms.

From application to reward credit

  1. Save the application route, referral code, selected welcome and terms. Check whether applying and being approved have separate deadlines.
  2. Record approval and complete required enrolment. The spending window may start at approval rather than first use.
  3. Schedule only planned eligible purchases. Check transaction versus posting dates; refunds, reversals and unposted transactions may not count.
  4. Check transactions when the statement arrives, reserve its full balance and confirm payment before the due date. For autopay, verify the mandate and account funds.
  5. Check referral, welcome and everyday rewards against their separate crediting schedules. Keep unreceived rewards out of your available cash.

Three welcomes: keep their tasks separate

Offer recordCurrent labelConditions to unpack
Mox card referralCheck reward: Up to HK$2,000 cashAccount opening, credit approval and spending have separate windows. Extra savings require funds; investing requires activation and trades, beyond ordinary shopping
Hong Kong Amex ExplorerCheck reward: 26,000 + 6,000 milesCheck approval date, local HKD purchases and enrolment. The maximum welcome counts basic earned points; inspect the referral separately
SC Cathay cardCheck reward: 10,000 + up to 120,000 milesSeparate new and existing customer referrals, then your tier's welcome. The Priority Private maximum cannot be applied to the standard card

These examples teach you to unpack tasks; they are not a market ranking. Open the records for eligibility, dates and limits, then check bank terms before applying.

Cashback or miles: what will you use?

For routine spending, find out whether cashback reduces a statement, can be withdrawn or works only as specified credit. Calculate existing purchases, caps and annual fees. A first-year waiver does not settle later costs; extra shopping needed for a waiver also costs money.

For a trip with a destination and dates, check required miles, usable seats, transfer ratios and charges, expiry and cash taxes still payable. Compare with a fare you would actually pay, rather than copying a fixed value per mile. Redemption rules can change.

If you mostly shop locally without a settled trip, start by counting usable cashback. With travel already planned, check a real redemption before collecting miles. Neither case justifies borrowing or unnecessary purchases for rewards.

Minimum payment does not switch interest off

HKMA explains that not paying in full on time generally loses the interest-free period. Unpaid balances and new transactions may accrue interest. Even after clearing a later statement, earlier accrued interest can appear; follow the issuer's calculation terms.

APR helps compare borrowing costs. It is not a reward rate, and dividing it by twelve does not produce your actual monthly charge. Interest start dates, charges and payment allocation affect the bill. Late payment can add fees; cash advances generally lack a grace period and may incur interest and fees from withdrawal.

Full-balance autopay still needs an active mandate, enough money and a successful debit. Pay particular attention to your first statement, then continue checking subsequent ones.

Missing online rewards: investigate both sides

First check the bank's transaction classification, intermediaries, enrolment and remaining cap. Then inspect exclusions for top-ups, bills, taxes, insurance and instalments. Tapping a phone does not make every wallet transaction eligible.

Shopping-portal tracking and card rewards have separate rules. The draft cashback shopping workflow covers codes and tracking; the eye+ usage breakdown gives another card's category and cap examples. Use the terms applicable to your transaction, rather than relying on a successful checkout screen.

Pause at an overseas HK$ checkout

An HKD option may use dynamic currency conversion, or DCC, with rates and markups supplied by merchants and service providers. HKMA's 2015 article explains the mechanism; its old fee examples are not today's bank tariff.

Compare displayed local-currency and HKD totals and exchange rates, then check issuer FX and HKD cross-border charges. A cost may be embedded in the rate without a separate fee line. Refunds can also be affected by exchange rates or fees; save evidence of your chosen currency.

Get your records before renewing, refunding or cancelling

  1. Before the annual fee, review rewards actually used, acceptance and waiver conditions. Do not judge renewal solely by the opening welcome.
  2. Ask how cancellation affects unposted purchases, instalments, refunds, points and welcome recovery. Closing the card does not necessarily settle everything.
  3. Keep statements, payment confirmations, enrolment messages and reward records for a possible dispute.
  4. Report unfamiliar transactions promptly. Disputes and refunds are assessed individually; recovery should not be assumed for every payment.

FAQ

Can I apply first and find purchases to meet the welcome later?
Check whether your existing shopping meets the terms first. Recalculate the cost if unnecessary purchases are needed, rather than enlarging your budget for a welcome.
Do I still need to read statements with autopay?
Yes. Check the mandate, available funds, successful full payment and unfamiliar transactions. Setup does not establish that every debit succeeds.
Does the headline welcome apply to my card?
Check tier, new-customer rules, referral versus welcome, enrolment and spending conditions. A maximum may include earned basic points or be restricted to particular banking customers.
How is a wallet purchase different from a top-up?
Direct card purchases and wallet funding may have different classifications; funding may earn no reward. Check issuer and merchant terms for both.
Can I cancel as soon as the welcome arrives?
Check reward recovery, annual fees, points and unfinished transactions, then ask the issuer how to proceed. Receiving the reward does not end every holding requirement.
