Book an Asia Miles award: check the seat and the cash first

Open the booking page before you redeem. The miles must already be in your own account, taxes are still cash, and no award seat means no redemption.
The order on the day you book
- Open the account and note the usable miles and the expiry. Leave out card points that have not been credited.
- Search the date you have already fixed. Read award space and the cash fare on the same page.
- Read the taxes and carrier surcharges. Stop if the cash is more than the gap you will pay.
- Count the sectors and the connection time. One-way and return have different caps, so a changed trip is not the same award.
- Read the change fee and the cancellation fee before you ticket. Do not assume the miles come back in full.
When to stop on the search page
| What you see | What the terms say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Enough miles, no seat that day | The airline controls award space | Change the date or buy the cash fare. A later seat is not promised |
| A one-way with extra sectors | Except oneworld multi-carrier awards and HK Express: at most 2 sectors, connection no longer than 24 hours | Check whether the trip is no longer a one-way |
| A return with more than four sectors | Same exceptions: at most 4 sectors and 1 stopover | A stopover can change the miles required |
| A long waitlist | At most 10 upgrade or companion waitlists on one account at once | Cancel one before you add another |
| You want to fly next year | Award tickets generally last 12 months from issue | Do not ticket a trip you cannot use inside that window |
This page cannot price one mile
Take the cash fare you would really pay for that day and cabin, then subtract the taxes and surcharges left after the redemption. That gap is the comparison with the cash ticket. Change the route, the taxes or the seat, and the gap moves.
A redemption chart does not produce one cash price per mile for every route. A seat you have not searched is not part of the trip.
How the miles stay in the account
Cathay's terms say one eligible transaction every 18 months extends the activity-based balance by 18 months. Earning and redeeming both count. Some refunds and cancellations do not.
No activity for 36 consecutive months cancels the remaining miles, Status Points and unused benefits. Time-based miles may be renewed for a fee shown on the page at the time. An amount that was not checked is not written here.
A card's welcome miles are not usable until they post

Keep the two rewards separate: eligible new SC Cathay cardholders can get 10,000 referral miles without spending, but the card’s welcome tiers need eligible spending. Apply via A3872270, check issuance by 31 March 2027, and do not budget for the extra 3,000 miles while its dates conflict. Credit involves repayment risk — 借定唔借?還得到先好借!
Requirement: No spend for the 10,000 referral miles; welcome miles need HK$5,000, HK$40,000 or HK$110,000 of eligible spend within the first 2 months

FAQ
- If I have the miles, can I book?
- Not by itself. The terms say space is controlled. No award seat on the search means that date cannot be redeemed.
- Is the redemption only miles?
- No. Departure taxes, airport or government fees, fuel surcharges, security and insurance charges, and other authorised fees are still cash, on the booking page.
- Can I add miles from someone at home?
- No. The miles must already be in the account making the redemption. Accounts cannot be pooled.
- How do I keep the miles from lapsing?
- Under the activity-based rule, an eligible transaction every 18 months extends them by 18 months. Thirty-six months with no activity cancels what is left.
- Can I hold an award ticket for next year?
- The terms say 12 months from issue, unless stated otherwise. Changes and refunds have separate fees.
